Carlsbad Unified families and staff, At the May 13, 2020 meeting of the Board of Trustees, it was determined that all Carlsbad Unified School District high school graduation ceremonies would be postponed to July 23. Our hearts go out to the seniors and their families who have been forced to miss out on so many important rites of passage due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When we surveyed 12th grade students and parents, it was clear that the most popular option would be an in-person event. The feedback was overwhelmingly in favor of postponing the ceremony to later in the summer in order to increase the chances of being allowed by public health officials to participate in some version of an in-person graduation. In addition to the July 23 ceremony, we also would like to recognize the accomplishments of the class of 2020 with a video presentation on June 11 (the original date of our commencement ceremonies). While we don’t yet know if colleges and universities will be welcoming students back to campus in the fall, we chose the July 23 date as the latest date that would still allow college-going students to participate before freshmen orientation activities in advance of the fall semester. Our high school principals will provide more specific information to you in the coming weeks. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for July 23! I am very hopeful that we will be able to recognize our graduates in a meaningful way, in person, depending on the public health order in effect on that date. We all want the absolute best for our graduates; thank you to the parents and family members who have helped support them over the past 13 years of their education. The graduation ceremony is as much for you as it is for the graduates. While this is not the end of the year we expected for our seniors, these experiences have the potential to help them to be more resilient, more flexible, and ultimately more successful in their future endeavors. I can’t wait to see where they will go and what they will achieve in the future. Sincerely, Dr. Ben Churchill Superintendent
