8/28/2020

As we conclude the first week of Distance Learning 2.0, I’d like to thank all of our staff, students, and families for your positive attitudes and willingness to persevere through challenges. I’ve spoken to many students, teachers and parents this week, and I know it has been a huge relief to reconnect with friends and colleagues. Technical glitches were to be expected, and we did experience some of those. But we also had many highlights as we learned new skills, developed new protocols, and (most importantly) made new friendships and working relationships. There is a lot of information to share today; I’ve organized our updates under separate headings to make the info easier to find. Technology assistance and new Live Help Hotline To better support students and families, we have a few new resources available. This offers some strategies to mitigate common issues. This shows how to update your chrome browser. And in addition to our next week we will launch our Technology Help Hotline with daily phone support from 7:30 am to 1:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The number is (760) 331-5006, and is also posted at the top of the Tech Help Request Form, located on our with lots of other useful information. Return to in-person instruction We continue to prepare for a return to in-person instruction at the elementary level on September 22, and at the middle and high schools on October 13. We have prepared mitigation plans, procured PPE equipment, and identified logistical supports to support expanded safety precautions. For more info, you can find our on our website. There has been much media attention about the possibility that San Diego County schools may be allowed to open for in-person instruction on September 1, pending the completion of 14 days of non-elevated data on six key metrics following the removal of our county from the state’s COVID-19 monitoring list. Today, the Governor announced a new framework for county monitoring, and we are reviewing state and county public health guidance for clarification about what that new framework means for school reopening. In any case, I’m pleased that we have taken a prudent course of action which prioritizes safety, consistency, predictability and continuity of learning. As long as there are no additional changes to the state or county public health orders between now and September 22, we are on track to welcome elementary students back on that date. I know you are all eager to know what the specific reentry plan looks like for your school. We’ll be working closely with teachers and staff on our transition to in-person instruction, and more information will be forthcoming about what reentry will look like at each school and for each grade level. While we are all eager to reopen school, please know it is equally important that we have established the conditions necessary to decrease the likelihood of subsequent closures due to virus transmission. Not only do we want to reopen, we want to remain open. Our delayed reopening timeline improves our chances for doing so. Parent and student feedback requested In advance of finalizing our plans for in-person instruction, we’d like to ask for some additional feedback from parents; next week we’ll send out more information along with a survey to families. Also next week, we’d like toget feedback from parents and students about their experience in Distance Learning 2.0. Please be on the lookout for these communications next week. A note of gratitude Brene Brown wrote “What separates privilege from entitlement is gratitude.” Many parents and family members worked hard this week to align their schedules to support students in our first week of Distance Learning 2.0. I want to thank you for your role in our collective success this week - I am truly grateful for our amazing families in Carlsbad. Likewise, many teachers, certificated staff, classified staff, and administrators worked long hours this summer to prepare for the launch of this school year; and everyone has been working long hours this week to make it the best return to instruction possible under the circumstances. I hope you’ll join me in expressing gratitude to all of our staff for pushing beyond their comfort zones and for doing their absolute best for kids. No solo queremos reabrir, queremos permanecer abiertos.
