Carlsbad Unified families and staff, At the May 13, 2020 meeting of the Board of Trustees, our Board directed staff to follow the guidelines in the current (effective May 10, 2020 and until further notice) for the remaining four weeks of the current school year. As such, we will continue Remote Online Learning through June 11, 2020. Students will not return to campus for in-person instruction in the current school year. As of today, all district facilities will be considered closed for the remainder of the school year; this allows our district staff to prioritize cleaning, maintenance, and facilities preparation to be ready for a safe reopening in the fall. It also gives us the opportunity to get a jump start on facilities modernization projects, funded by our 2018 Measure HH bond, at Hope Elementary, Kelly Elementary, Magnolia Elementary, and Carlsbad High School. In the coming weeks, we will provide more detailed information to families about timelines and processes for returning equipment, textbooks, and other materials to school, and for picking up personal items left at school before the COVID-19 closures. Please look for communication from your principal next week on these items. Because we hope student learning will continue over the summer, we are currently only planning to collect Chromebooks from 12th graders and students who do not plan to return in the fall. Between now and the end of the current year, our Instructional Services Department will be working with teachers to identify optional summer learning activities to keep students engaged and prepared for the new year. We’ll provide more information as soon as possible. I realize that some of you will be greatly disappointed to know that students are not able to return to school this year; others of you will be relieved to know that a final decision has been made. I have great sympathy for every one of our 11,500+ Carlsbad Unified students and their families. As I help support my own daughters through the drastic changes COVID-19 has required, I know first-hand that this school year is not ending in a way anyone could have predicted even 10 weeks ago. I hope you are staying healthy and safe at home. Take care of yourselves and your loved ones. We are all in this together. Sincerely, Dr. Ben Churchill Superintendent
