Equity Resources for Families

6/4/2020

Carlsbad Unified families and staff, By now we’ve all seen the images of protests, both peaceful and not, across our country in the wake of the terrible killing of another Black American. There is very real pain in our nation. And I know there is very real pain, and frustration, and fear right here in our own community. Carlsbad Unified School District is committed to making our schools a place where every student and staff member feels safe and valued. To that end, this year we formed a Districtwide Equity Committee made up of staff members from all sixteen of our school campuses. We began the year with presentations about Unconscious Bias for all staff, and we partnered with our employee organizations to continue trainings throughout the year. Our Equity Committee will accelerate this work next year as we focus on ways to address inclusivity and antiracism. The topic of racism may be uncomfortable. I know many parents have asked, “What do I say? What is age appropriate? Are they too young?” Starting the conversation is important; we’ve shared a few resources here for families to review and determine how best to have these conversations in their own homes: The San Diego County Office of Education also has a countywide Equity Team; they have put together resources to help educators and parents create a safe space to talk about current events and racialized violence with students. You can access those resources at . As always, these resources are not meant to be exhaustive, nor is their inclusion an endorsement of a particular political viewpoint. You know your students best; I hope these resources are helpful to you as a starting point. In normal times, our classrooms would be powerful and safe places to discuss race, inequities, and recent events with students. We want our youth to be compassionate people who participate as responsible citizens in a democracy, and we need to talk with them about the difficult issues that we struggle with as a country. As we plan for school in the fall, we will engage our community in important dialogue, and we will support our teachers’ efforts to have honest and age-appropriate conversations with their students so we deepen their understanding of the long and complicated history of racial injustice, and develop our students’ ability to address injustice and improve society in the future. Schools share an important role with parents as we help our young people navigate the world. I look forward to partnering with you in this work. Sinceramente, Dr. Ben Churchill Superintendent
